FTP Tutorial
|
Once you have your profile configured you should be able to connect to the server.
As I said before, all FTP utilities function the same. Once you have logged into the server your FTP utility should have two windows side by side. The window on the left side contains the files on your local computer. The files on the right side are the files located on the server. The window on the right contains some general server files (I.E. .cshrc, .hushlogin, .login). At this point you will need to create a "www" folder in the right side window. You can do this in most FTP Utilities by searching the menu commands for "Make a new directory". When prompted to enter the name of the new directory type www. Now the window on the right side should have a folder named "www". Double Click the "www" directory to open it. All file transfers should be placed in this folder or the outside world will not be able to view them. Find the file on your local computer that you would like to transfer into the www folder on the server. Once you have located the file, highlight it and select upload from your FTP utility menu. Some FTP utilities allow you to double click the file to transfer and some allow you to merely drag the file into the server window. Once the transfer is complete you should be able to see your file in the window on the right. You will still have the file in the left window because FTP only copies the file it does not physically remove it from your computer.
Now that you have a copy of "myfile.gif" located on the server the world can see it. How, you might ask? Open your Internet Browser (i.e. Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator). The URL, or address, of your new web space is:http://www.frtci.net/~yourusername
Here you will be able to view all files located in your personal directory on the ShawneeLink server.
If you are transferring HTML documents for a personal web page ensure that the home page of your web site is named "index.html". The server has set "index.html" as the default page. This means that when someone types in your web address (www.frtci.net/~yourusername) this will be the first page they see.
We hope this ftp tutorial has been helpful.
